As spring approaches in the United States, many of us drilling in Oklahoma and Texas welcome the nicer temperatures but must also remain weather-aware with an expectation of severe storms, and even tornadoes. This isn’t something that could happen – it’s something that did happen as I worked on an Oklahoma rig that was in the path of a tornado one year ago. As a rig manager, it’s my responsibility to be sure my crew recognizes the importance of being prepared – knowing procedures and being ready at a moment’s notice to respond to unexpected circumstances, whether it’s severe weather, unexpected downhole conditions, equipment malfunction, the list goes on.
