February 2025 - H&P Actively C.A.R.E.® Newsletter

Being the fastest and setting records is a great achievement. Who doesn’t want to hold a performance record for drilling the fastest well section or quickest rig move? Everyone does! Our business thrives on delivering top-tier performance, however, all that performance efficiency means nothing if someone gets injured or killed in the process.

Tension between safety and performance priorities while performing a task can be natural and healthy, but what if we didn’t have to choose between the two?

By being intentional in our job execution, with practice, we can improve performance and help ensure that our co-workers are not exposed to potential serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs)!

This is especially critical when tackling new tasks or working with less experienced teammates. Following established processes and best practices isn’t just about compliance – it sets you up for long-term success. Though taking shortcuts can sometimes lead to a perceived increase in performance, taking shortcuts can also result in increased risk that an exposures is not addressed and our people experience a SIF. In addition, we know that when newer employees take shortcuts consistently there are long-term effects on their risk tolerance, creating a new generation of employees that use the same risky shortcuts.

Let’s play the long game. Taking the time to do tasks the right way, every time, can help lead to sustainable performance gains without compromising safety. Let’s not allow our drive for performance to push our teammates to take shortcuts. Instead, let’s commit to both safety and performance. Let’s do the right thing!
